How Muhammad Established Islam As A Major Political And Religious Force In The World Essay

While Muhammad was living with his significant other Khadija, he regularly went to a cavern outside Makkah called Hira, where he would reflect and ask. During one night in 610CE, when Muhammad was 40, he was in a cavern on Mount Hira. God uncovered himself to Muhammad. This was known as the evening of intensity, and it relates in Surah 95 of the Qur’an, which is entitled The Blood Clot. At the point when Muhammad got back, Khadija turned into his first adherent. At that point his cousin Ali, a liberated slave called Zayd, and perhaps the dearest companion, Abu Bakr, all became supporters. There began one of the extraordinary religions of the world. Muhammad had a solid conviction that there was just a single God, the maker. He accepted that all people ought to be equivalent in their relationship with this maker. This sabotaged the clans of Makkah who, particularly the Quarish, ascended against Muhammad and his devotees. Every through hello there life, Muhammad battled to build up Islam, to accumulate supporters, and to make a considerable political power. In the 22 years after the main disclosure, until Muhammad kicked the bucket in 632CE, God conveyed the Qu’ran to Muhammad, his courier. When that God had wrapped up the Qu’ran, Muhammad had moved to Madinah. Subsequently we get Makkan and Medinan sections. The Makkan refrains are normally shorter, more judgemental, and are found towards the finish of the Qu’ran. After the subsequent disclosure, the night venture, Muhammad moved to Yathrib, 40 miles north of Makkah, to settle debates with the travelers from that town. He went there with family and supporters in 622CE. At the point when he showed up, he fabricated a house, which was later to turn into the principal mosque. He at that point renamed the town Madinah. This is the place the focal network was built up. After Muhammad kicked the bucket, nobody knew whether he had named a replacement. For the most part, it would go to his oldest child. At long last the pioneer was picked by the Muslim people group as an individual of incredible individual respectability. This is the conviction of the Sunni part of Islam, who didn't need a legislature, yet they needed to depend on a definitive ruler. The Shi’a branch accepts that the early history was one-sided against Ali, Muhammad’s cousin. At the point when Ali became the pioneer, the individuals who trusted Ali to be the genuine replacement framed the different ‘Party of Ali’. The Shi’a branch needed a pioneer from the group of Muhammad. Islam was enormously broadened by the accomplishments of the initial four caliph replacements to Muhammad. Here is the kind of people they are and what they accomplished in their standard: * Abu Bakr (632-634 CE) He and his militaries vanquished Arab clans, and they went similarly as the Byzantine Empire’s outskirts. Abu Bakr had in excess of an individual conviction of Islam and he had a conviction of political belief system. * Umar (634-644 CE) He proceeded after Abu Bakr and caught Jerusalem and North Africa. * Uthman (644-656 CE) After Ali turned down the caliphate, Uthman was picked and he extended the domain through North Africa and Eastwards to India and China. * Ali (656-661 CE) He made Mu’awiya co-caliph, an appalling move. Two gatherings were framed, one supporting Ali, the other supporting Mu’awiya. Islam today is the second biggest religion on the planet and it is developing quick. It is critical in the cutting edge governmental issues. It likewise adds to workmanship, music, design and theory. The religion has developed to have more than 2 billion supporters. Anyway as of late Islamophobia has stepped in. Islam has been dealt with remorselessly by the western media over the most recent couple of years. Anyway Islam intends to give up, or submit, and it is connected near another Arabic word meaning harmony. For sure a Muslim is ‘one who surrenders’.

Feminism and Women’s Self Image an Example by

Woman's rights and Women’s Self Image Womens looks have basically been affected by media and the pictures it anticipates. From early immaturity, a young lady starts putting her incentive on what is the standard as indicated by peers, TV, motion pictures, magazines and announcements. At the point when a little youngster, afterwards a lady, never feels as though she is adequate, in view of media impacts, she is left inclination not exactly and sub-par. As a lady ages she gets characterized as even less alluring. The media once in a while depicts a lady more than 30 as excellent, energetic, attractive or alluring. The imbued message ladies (and men) get is that full grown ladies are not appealing or hot. This persistent barrage of unachievable measures sets ladies up for lifetimes of poor mental self portrait. This picture, normally thought up from considering models to be icons, is at the foundation of the issue. The Barnard/Columbia Women's Handbook says, The scope of real body types in the past was the same than today. What has changed is the thing that has been set up as the perfect. Studies have demonstrated that while 25 years back the normal model weighed 8% not exactly the normal American lady, the present model weighs 23% underneath the national normal. The rejection of such a significant number of ladies from portrayal is a forswearing of the wide scope of bodies and appearances. Rather than wondering about the grouping of body shapes, we consistently contrast ourselves and one another. We start to typify our own and other ladies' bodies. So ladies have instilled a feeling of rivalry with other ladies. They additionally feel inherently mediocre compared to the norm. Ladies have these emotions more emphatically than men. In the article, Mirror, Mirror the writer clarifies, Why are ladies quite a lot more self-basic than men? Since ladies are decided on their appearance more than men, and principles of female magnificence are significantly higher and increasingly rigid. Ladies are persistently shelled with pictures of the 'perfect' face and figure - what Naomi Woolf calls 'The Official Body'. Consistent introduction to romanticized pictures of female excellence on TV, magazines and boards causes outstanding great hopes to appear to be typical and anything shy of flawlessness appear to be unusual and revolting. It has been assessed that young ladies presently observe more pictures of exceptionally excellent ladies in a single day than our moms saw all through their whole youthfulness. Since its beginning, woman's rights has endeavored to address this flawed picture. As per www.usinfo.state.gov, women's liberation is characterized as The view, verbalized in the nineteenth century, that ladies are characteristically equivalent to men and merit equivalent rights and openings. All the more as of late, a social and political development that grabbed hold in the United States in the late 1960s, before long spreading universally. Women's liberation attempts to make the media assume liability for its impact and the pictures it anticipates. In a discussion given by women's activist writer Rose Simone, she stated, A great columnist knows about the way that their world isn't the main reality. A decent writer should attempt to mirror the assorted variety that is out there . . . what's more, the capacity to do that includes having the option to see and comprehend that since you have not experienced something, for example, prejudice, or on the grounds that you would by and by not see a similar thing as someone else, that doesn't make the other individual's arrangement of encounters less genuine or less deserving of announcing. Different ways woman's rights endeavors to beat negative excellence/self-perceptions are by training and imparting an awareness of other's expectations. In The Good Body, creator Eve Ensler says, The Good Body started with me and my specific fixation on my flawed stomach. I have diagrammed this self-loathing, recorded it, attempted to tail it back to its source. Here, not at all like the ladies in The Vagina Monologs, I am my own casualty, my own culprit. Obviously, the devices of my self exploitation have been made promptly accessible. The example of the ideal body has been modified into me since birth. Be that as it may, whatever the social impacts and weights, my distraction with my fat, my consistent eating less junk food, working out, stressing, is purposeful. I get the magazines. I get tied up with the perfect. I accept that light, level young ladies have the mystery. Despite the fact that woman's rights has made incredible steps since the 1960s, there is as yet far to go in upgrading womens mental self portrait. For whatever length of time that ladies contrast themselves with bogus pictures of flawlessness depicted by the media, they will be spooky with low self-esteem and a need to arrive at an out of reach objective. Shopify.com also suggests several supplies to have readily available at the table to make the craft selling experience easier. These supplies include, markers, pens, and paper, and bags for the customers purchases. In addition, a variety of payment methods to be available to customers is advised. These payment methods include cash, check, debit, and credit cards. Additional expectations of the members of this society include making crafts from individual ideas and not always copying ideas from the internet or social media apps. Assisting others by giving your talent away is al so highly encouraged in this society. The expectations for the members help this society run the events they hold in an orderly fashion. The inspiration for the crafts in this society can spur from pretty much anywhere. It doesnt matter where the inspiration comes from as long as the members have ideas to craft from. Crafters will spend hours searching Pinterest, Facebook, and several other sites searching for the perfect craft to make. In addition, craft blogs and Youtube are amazing sources for craft inspiration as well. The type of inspiration needed for crafts can vary depending on what time of the year it is. Each season brings new crafts and new inspiration. Butterfly crafts are common during the spring and summer, leave and pumpkin crafts common during the chilly fall months, and snowflake and snowman crafts are for the cold, long winter season. If searched for hard enough, inspiration can come from pretty much anywhere in this society. The society of a DIY crafter is certainly an interesting one. From the crafts made to the bonds built, it sure is a good way to be productive and share many common things. This community matters because eventually, one may want to learn about making DIY crafts. The members of this society could assist this individual in doing so. Everyone is welcome in this society and it doesnt matter where inspiration comes from as long as the members have some. It is a highly diverse community that is a great thing to be a part of.

Why Do You Want to Write About Yourself?

Why Do You Want to Write About Yourself?I have been talking to myself lately and I have come to realize that the word 'self' is not very descriptive. There are a lot of us who use our own personal experiences as examples to make us feel better about ourselves. So what do you think it means when you say 'write about myself'? Well, when I say 'write about myself' I am using this as an example. So, my question to you is why you are asking yourself to write about yourself. I see it as a statement of weakness and self-defeat. Please help me answer this question. Why are you saying this? The most obvious reason is because you are in denial. Sooner or later you will have to face the fact that you are someone who is different from other people. Are you not ashamed of being a little different from others? If you said 'yes' then you should take it from here. Do not expect to find answers in a self-help book, but rather read books on self-esteem, self-confidence and growth.Forget the past, forget about the future, forget about your friends, forget about any reason why you need to take a break. Remember that there is no reason to let the past rule your life. In this age of money and self-esteem you are the most fortunate person ever born.Don't make a huge investment, don't buy lots of clothes, don't make a fuss about how your body looks. Simply be happy with your current body and move on to the next one. Go for a walk in the park, watch TV, go to a restaurant, or get your dog to exercise.Write about yourself because your own life is so special and unique. If you have a deep desire to change your own life, write about yourself. It may be difficult to do at first but you are only fooling yourself if you do not take action. Remember that you are the only one who can change your life.

No Killing of Animals, Live in a Vegatative State - 788 Words

We walk happily through the supermarket isles browsing for the best price on a piece of fresh flesh. Bring it home and smother it in spices and sauces to make it appetizing and devour the juices on a daily basis. Every time we sit down to eat our favorite chicken sandwich we are consuming the bodily remnants of an animal, a creature that once had life but never any rights. Thus, eliminating the consumption of meat is the only logical way forward as a vegetarian diet considerably improves one’s health, benefits the overall environment and greatly lessens the suffering of animals worldwide. Being a vegetarian is beneficial to all aspects of life and is the only morally reasonable way to live life. Killing animals to simply fulfill our excessive gastronomic urges is not only immoral but also appalling. Meat consumption is and has never been necessary for optimal nutrition. There are many diseases associated with the consumption of meat and animal products including: cancer, heart disease, stroke, osteoporosis, diabetes, and obesity among many others. Because of the irregular hours and unsteady work, many musicians choose not to perform. Some teach at music schools or conservatories. Others teach in colleges or secondary or elementary schools. These musician-teachers provide instruction in music appreciation, music theory, and voice or give lessons on individual instruments. Musicians who understand the mechanics of their instruments may do repairs and tuning. Libraries for the performing arts hire musicians as librarians. Music libraries in schools and in radio and television stations also employ musicians. Some musicians give music therapy to emotionally and physically disabled people and to the aged.Almost all professional musicians begin their training at an early age. They intention to study for many years, either privately with a music teacher or in a music school. Technical skill and man lull dexterity are necessary for playing an instrument well, but mechanical skill is not enough. Musicians should have an ear, or ability to hear differences in pitch, as well as a feeling for the style of the music they play. In addition, some kinds of music, such as jazz, require the ability to improvise. Musicians should also possess strong mental and physical discipline. Only through long years of study do musicians gain a thorough knowledge of music and the ability to interpret it. Besides developing their musical abilities, musicians must acquire poise and stage presence. They must be strong enough to handle long hours, travel engagements, auditions, and practice sessions. After studying with one teacher for a number of years, a student may wish to study at a conservatory, or special school for musicians. Many schools accept students on the basis of auditions. Only those judged to be the most promising are accepted. As students at the college and university level, musicians follow a course of study either in instrument or in voice: both areas include music history and theory, USIA interpretation, composition, and conducting as well as performance. A conservatory degree or a bachelors degree in music allows a musician to pursue the state certification needed for elementary and secondary school teaching positions. Either a masters or a doctoral degree in music is generally required for college and university staff positions; however, some schools make exceptions for well-qualified musicians.Prospective musicians should perform as much as possible, playing with a local band and taking advantage of any opportunity to gain experience with professionals. Some beginning Caucasians and singers form their own bands. This experience may lead to auditions for other, more professional groups. College placement offices and music department staff may help students find a job teaching music in a school or to individual students. Trade and industry publications such as Variety and Show Business Weekly often carry notices of auditions. They sometimes list agents who help book musical talent as well.Agents help musicians find jobs and help producers find musical talent in exchange for a percentage of the musicians earnings. In all cases, getting that first break squires time, patience, and a great deal of talent and determination on the part of the musician. Jobs in the musical industry are expected to grow at an average rate through 2014. Many classical musicians compete for the few positions with one of the major symphony orchestras, metropolitan and regional orchestras, or the hundreds of other smaller orchestras in the country.Stable employment can be found in recording studio work or as a teacher of music in a conservatory, school, or college. Many part-time musicians supplement their incomes by giving private lessons. For this season, it is expected that there will be more than enough music teachers to meet the demand for private instruction. There will be openings as musicians leave the field, but because of intense competition only the most talented are likely to find regular employment. Musicians salaries vary widely.According to the Occupational Employment Statistics survey of 2004, the median salary for musicians is $17. 85 per hour. The median hourly wage in performing arts companies is $20. 70 and $12. 17 in religious organizations. Many performing musicians belong to the American Federation of Musicians. As of 2004 minimum salaries for musicians playing in major symphony orchestras ranged from $700 to $2,080 per week. These musicians are also guaranteed at least a seasons work, which may last up to fifty-two weeks.Metropolitan and regional orchestras generally have a shorter season. Many musicians face intermittent periods of unemployment, reducing their yearly income considerably. As a rule, musicians work for more than one employer and supplement their incomes with other types of jobs. Musicians have long and irregular work schedules. Besides daily practice and rehearsals for new pieces, they may work days, nights, and weekends. Musicians must be willing to travel to give performances across the country or around the world.Hip hop is a form of popular music thats comprised mainly of emceeing and decaying. The other two components that complete the four elements of hip- hop are graffiti and breakfasting. As hip-hop evolves into big business, the four elements (emceeing, decaying, graffiti, and breakfasting) are constantly being merged with others like clothing trends, slang, and general mindset. Rap is a form of music that stemmed from hip-hop culture. Hip hop is a lifestyle with its own lingo, dress code, etc. In the words of KIRKS-One, hip-hop s something you live, rap is something you do. A product Of cross-cultural integration, rap is deeply rooted within ancient African culture and oral tradition. Hip-hop is believed to have originated in the Bronx by a Jamaican DC named Cool Here Heres style of decaying involved reciting rhymes over instrumentals. At house parties, Here would rap with the microphone, using myriad of in-house references. Duplicates of Heroes house parties soon drifted through Brooklyn, Manhattan. Here and other block party Ads helped spread the message of hip-hop around town and spawned tons of followers. Hip-hop as a musical melting pot is still evolving. It has become more eclectic, borrowing from soul, jazz and live instrumentation with the likes of De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest, and most recently Kenya West championing the soulful rap movement. Additionally, raps potential for political advocacy stems from the function of its predecessors, African-American rhyming games, as forms of resistance to systems of subjugation and slavery. Rhyming games encoded race relations between African-American slaves and their white masters in a way that allowed them to pass the scrutiny of suspicious overseers.Additionally, rhyming games allowed slaves to use their creative intellect to provide inspiration and entertainment. For example, by characterizing the slave as a rabbit and the master as a fox, Beer Rabbit tales disguised stories of slaves outwitting their masters and escaping plantations behind the facade of a comical adventure. Hip-hop journalist Dave D connects the African oral tradit ion to modern rap: You see, the slaves were smart and they talked in metaphors. They would be killed if the slave masters heard them speaking in unfamiliar tongues. So they did what modern-day rappers dothey flexed their lyrical skills. 7 Rap has developed as a form of resistance to the subjugation of working-class African-Americans in urban centers. Though it may be seen primarily as a form of entertainment, rap has the powerful potential to address social, economic, and political issues and act as a unifying voice for its audience. Cool Here and DC Hollywood are given credit for introducing the Jamaican style of cutting and mixing into the musical culture of the South Bronx. Here was the first DC to buy two copies of the same record for just a 1 5-second break (instrumental segment) in the middle. By mixing back and forth between the two copies he as able to double, triple, or endlessly extend the break. By doing this, Here made the turntable a musical instrument. While he was mixing with two turntables, Here would also perform with the microphone in Jamaican style?joking, boasting, and using all around group references. Heres parties soon gained notice and were recorded on cassette tapes.Copies of the tapes quickly made their way through the Bronx, Brooklyn, and uptown Manhattan, creating a number of similar DC acts. Among the new Ads was Africa Bumboat, the first Black Muslim in rap. Bumboat often waged in sound-system battles with Here. The sound yester competitions Were held in city parks, where hot-wired Street lamps supplied electricity, or at local clubs. Bumboat would sometimes mix sounds from rock-music and television shows into the standard funk and disco advance that Here and most of his followers relied on.By the sass any sound source was considered useable and rap artists borrowed sounds from such disparate sources as Israeli folk music, bebop jazz records, and television news broadcasts. In 1976 Grandmaster Flash introduced the technique of quick mixing, in which sound bites as short as one or two seconds are combined for a unique effect. Shortly after Flash introduced quick mixing, his partner Grandmaster Melee Mel composed the first extended stories in rap. Up to this point, most of the words heard over the work of disc jockeys had been improvised phrases and expressions. In 1978 DC Grand Wizard Theodore introduced scratching of records to produce rhythmic patterns. In 1979 the first two rap records appeared: King Tim l by the Fatback Band, and Rappers Delight, by Sugarbird Gang. A series of verses by the three members of Sugarbird Gang, Rappers Delight became a national hit, reaching number 36 on the Billboard magazine popular music charts. The spoken content, mostly bragging spiced with fantasy, came largely from material used by the earlier rappers. The background for Rappers Delight was supplied by studio musicians, who copied the basic groove of the hit song Good Times (1979) by a disco group Chic. Sampling brought into question the ownership of the new sound. Some artists claimed that by sampling recordings of black artist they were challenging white corporate America and the recording industry right to own black cultural expression. Rap artists were also challenging other musicians right to own, control, and be given credit for the use of their creations. By the early most artists requested permission for the use of samples.

Presents from my Aunts in Pakistan Essay Example For Students

Presents from my Aunts in Pakistan Essay I have decided to compare in detail Presents from my Aunts in Pakistan by Moniza Alvi, and Search for my Tongue by Sujata Bhatt, because these are the two poems that I find most interesting.  I shall begin by discussing them individually in some (hopefully not too much) detail.  Presents from my Aunts in Pakistan is a very cultural poem, focusing on the differences between Pakistani and English cultures. Generally, Pakistani culture is seen as more lavish than that of England, and this poem expresses that in the type or clothing worn by each culture. Pakistani clothing is described as lovely, clearly shown in line 18-19 I could never be as lovely as these clothes. Alvi, describing the elaborate clothing worn by Pakistani women, goes on to say I couldnt rise out of its fire, half English (Line 24-25). The poet also says, I longed for denim and corduroy. She is saying that she feels more comfortable in the simple clothes worn by English women, and doesnt think she could live up to the Pakistani clothing. The clothing in this poem is used as a metaphor for the cultures of our two nations, and so she is in fact saying that she feels more comfortable in England that in Pakistan, but Pakistani culture is more elegant and beautiful than that of England. The story in the poem is that a girl is taken from Pakistan to England when she is very young, and only remembers a few images of her home. The poet structured the poem in stanzas of irregular lengths, with each describing a different aspect of the cultures, or the story that the poet is telling. This seems to show a seriousness to the words in the poem, since other things have been deliberately left out.  The poem uses imagery well describing cultures/clothing, using phrases like glistening like an orange split open (line 4). This allows of the poem to be assimilated in more depth by the reader, and also makes it more effective at getting the message across. Search for my Tongue is a poem about a woman who speaks 2 languages English and Indian. She is from India, but has been forced to speak English, but she sometimes forgets what language she is speaking. This is shown in the poem in line 17-29, which are written in her mother tongue. The entire poem describes her lingual conflict, and the way that whenever she thinks the mother tongue has gone from her mouth, it appears again. This poem is structured in 3 sections. The first section is line 1-16, the second is line 16-30, and the final section is line 31-38. The first and last sections are in English, the second is written in her natural language. The third section describes the mother tongue, comparing it to a plant.  This poem is a very good example of imagery, with lines like it grows back, a stump of a shoot. The third section of the poem all adds to the same image that of a plant. This image begins at line 31, and continues to the end of the poem using phrases like the bud opens and it blossoms out of my mouth to add to the metaphor of a plant. This metaphor gives a very strong image, and this image is very easy to see because plants are something that we all see every day, so have no trouble imagining, and it is a very appropriate metaphor because the idea of growth is commonly associated with plants. Final Comparison  Although imagery is used in both poems, Bhatt uses it best in her description of a tongue as a plant. I think that the most significant similarity between the poems is that they both describe a cultural clash within a person. Search for my tongue has a lingual clash, and the clash in Presents from my Aunts in Pakistan is that of lifestlyes. Both poems use English as one of the cultures, and an Asian culture as the second. I am not aware of the significance of this, however I would guess that since Asian races are stereotyped in negative ways, and racism is directed at them in many parts of England, the writers (who are of Asian origin) are attempting to show the English people that we are not different, hoping to stop racism toward them.

I would also like to add that cost behavior is also identifying the key resources that are performed, resources used in performing these activities, costs of the resources, and what the cost is driven from. 2-2. Two rules of thumb when analyzing cost behavior are to manage what the company manufactures, sells, and to give advice as to where costs can be reduced. 2-3. Three examples of a variable cost are a 12% increase in the production of dresses, which will cause a 12% increase in variable costs. A 10% increase in clothes will cause an 10% increase in variable costs. A 30% increase in labor hours will cause a 30% increase in variable costs. Three examples of a fixed cost are a 12% increase in airline costs but the fixed costs remain unchanged. A 50% increase in marketing advertisements and the fixed costs remain unchanged. Lastly, a 60% increase in units of production but the fixed costs remain the same. The word immediately is used in the definition of a fixed cost and not in the definition of a variable cost because changes to the cost drivers to not happen immediately with a fixed cost like they do with a variable cost. -5. I agree that it is confusing to think of fixed costs on a per-unit basis because changes to the cost driver take place at a slower rate than they do with a variable cost. So it would be difficult to single out any costs. 2-6. I disagree because you also must link the resource costs to the activities to get the result of your output. 2-7. I agree with this statement because fixed costs take longer to get back. That is why the relevant range is important for a fixed cost, since you can estimate the amount. 2-8. The major assumption that underlies CVP analysis is the effects of output volume on revenue, expenses, and net income. When you know what the effects are you can then figure out where you can improve or make cuts. 2-9. I agree with this statement because any financial situation is different. In a fixed cost situation, the cost would remain unchanged. 2-10. I agree with this statement since the contribution margin also has total sales and the variable cost percentage in the equation. 2-11. A break-even analysis is a misnomer because the CVP is sometime referred to the break-even analysis. A break-even point tells you at which point the profits exceed the expenses. The CVP can be used to plan, and make decisions based on sales or costs. 2-12. I do not agree with this statement because every company is different. One company may have higher expenses then another, making their break-even point higher. It does not matter what industry it is, because the break-even point will always be different based upon revenue or expenses. 2-13. I agree with this statement because it is important that you choose the correct method based upon your company’s revenue, expenses, and net income. All three of these are good methods, but there may be a more detailed plan that works better for you. 2-14. Three ways of lowering a break-even point are lowering your expenses, lower the product levels and reducing your staff. 2-15. I agree with this statement because the incremental analysis will do the same as the CVP, such as seeking the change in revenue, expenses, and income. 2-16. Operating leverage is the firm’s ratio of fixed to variable costs. A highly leveraged company may be risky because little changes in sales volume result in large changes in net income. -17. An increase in sales volume would result in decreasing economies of scale for this company by the changes would decrease the net income, and would cause higher variable costs. 2-18. The relationship between margin of safety and the break-even point is they both show where the company needs to be in order to make a profit. Also, it shows where expenses equal revenues. 2-19. I disagree with this statement bec ause the contribution ratio and the gross margin are never equal. 2-20. I disagree with this statement because no organization has unlimited resources and knowledge of how costs change with volume changes. 2-21. The reason for the lower contribution margin could be that the break-even point was not met which caused expenses to not equal revenue. 2-22. The CVP formula for computing the income before taxes is adding the income or gain and subtracting your expenses. 2-23. The CVP formula for computing the effects of a change in volume on after-tax income is the total contribution margin divided by total sales which gives you the variable cost percentage.

How to Make a Phosphate Buffer Solution

How to Make a Phosphate Buffer Solution The goal of a buffer solution is to help maintain a stable pH when a small amount of acid or base is introduced into a solution. A phosphate buffer solution is a handy buffer to have around, especially for biological applications. Because phosphoric acid has multiple dissociation constants, you can prepare phosphate buffers near any of the three pHs, which are at 2.15, 6.86, and 12.32. The buffer is most commonly prepared at pH 7 using monosodium phosphate and its conjugate base, disodium phosphate. Phosphate Buffer Materials Monosodium phosphateDisodium phosphateWaterPhosphoric acid to make the pH more acidic or sodium hydroxide to make the pH more alkalinepH meterGlasswareHot plate with stirring bar Prepare the Phosphate Buffer Decide on the concentration of the buffer. Most buffers are used at a concentration between 0.1 M and 10 M. If you make up a concentrated buffer solution, you can dilute it as needed.Decide on the pH for your buffer. This pH should be within one pH unit from the pKa of the acid/conjugate base. So, you can prepare a buffer at pH 2 or pH 7, for example, but pH 9 would be pushing it.Use the Henderson-Hasselbach equation to calculate how much acid and base you need. You can simplify the calculation if you make 1 liter of buffer. Select the pKa value that is closest to the pH of your buffer. For example, if you want the pH of your buffer to be 7, then use the pKa of 6.9: pH pKa log ([Base]/[Acid])ratio of [Base]/[Acid] 1.096The molarity of the buffer is the sum of the molarities of the acid and conjugate base or the sum of [Acid] [Base]. For a 1 M buffer (selected to make the calculation easy), [Acid] [Base] 1.[Base] 1 - [Acid].Substitute this into the ratio and solve:[Base ] 0.523 moles/L.Now solve for [Acid]: [Base] 1 - [Acid], so [Acid] 0.477 moles/L. Prepare the solution by mixing 0.477 moles of monosodium phosphate and 0.523 moles of disodium phosphate in a little less than a liter of water.Check the pH using a pH meter and adjust the pH as necessary using phosphoric acid or sodium hydroxide.Once you have reached the desired pH, add water to bring the total volume of phosphoric acid buffer to 1 L.If you prepared this buffer as a stock solution, you can dilute it to make up buffers at other concentrations, such as 0.5 M or 0.1 M. Advantages and Disadvantages of Phosphate Buffers The two key advantages of phosphate buffers are that phosphate is highly soluble in water and that it has an extremely high buffering capacity. However, these may be offset by certain disadvantages in some situations. Phosphates inhibit enzymatic reactions.Phosphate precipitates in ethanol, so it cant be used in preparations to precipitate DNA or RNA.Phosphates sequester divalent cations (e.g., Ca2 and Mg2).

International Banking Law and Capital Markets Assignment

International Banking Law and Capital Markets - Assignment Example There is a need to develop more stringent standards for the banks to address the deficiencies that come on the surface in the financial crises of late 2000. The introduction of Basel-111 aims at to strengthen the capital requirements of the bank and the regulatory requirement of bank liquidity and bank leverage. In Basel II, the risk management was out sourced to third party. The Ratings of financial instruments were conducted by the outsource agencies Fitch ibca, moody and poor and standard without intervention of official agencies. The AAA ratings on  mortgage backed securities,  credit default swaps  and other instruments in practice evidencing extremely bad credit risks. The implementation of Basel III surely will decrease annual GDP growth to the extent of 0.05 to 0.15 percentages. It is responsibility of the directors of the company to keep an eye on  market liquidity  condition that enables them to hold major assets for the accountability of material losses2. Require ment of Basel III The Basel III primarily addresses and focuses on the liquidity risk, capital adequacy ratios and stress testing. It requires banks to follow the requirement of Basel III and to compute the liquidity and leverage ratios accordingly. Therefore, the banks are to keep themselves align with the new requirement in order to integrate all relevant data to develop a new approach of data analysis and modeling. Basel III demands sufficient transparency and zero rated documentation ever than before to ensure that the deployment of funds would bear fruits3. Banks must ensure creation of new models that ensure compliance of Basel III requirement. It is a matter of fact that most of the institutions are reluctant to implement it in its true spirit due to reasons best known to them. However, they have no other option but to implement it in order to avoid penalty from compliance and monitoring watch dogs. In other words, compliance of Basel III requirement is mandatory and not opti onal. Keeping in mind the necessity, the banks are developing infrastructure and models for the banks to make best use of its capacity to pin point and respond to the profit making opportunities4. According to Simon Nixon, â€Å"no one disputes the broad thrust of Basel III, that banks should hold much higher levels of higher-quality capital. Indeed, all major European banks have well-developed plans to meet the new rules ahead of time.†5 It is a matter of fact that in today’s world each and every organization including banks heavily relies upon latest technology to meet the requirement of customer satisfaction besides regulatory compliance by the banks. The more efficient business decision making are based on the reliability of their quality data. Any bank who successfully receives the data through reliable domestic sources within the bank to position its data warehouse on sound footings coupled with technology infrastructure stands to deliver the goods efficiently in terms of compliance and better business6. â€Å"Basel III tightened up the rules on what could be counted as core capital, increased the risk-weights that determined how much capital a bank should hold against a particular exposure and finally introduced a tough new minimum ratio of core capital to risk-weighted assets, set at 7% for small banks and rising to 9.5% for the largest banks deemed

Strategic Management Case Study Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 4500 words

Strategic Management - Case Study Example Inaugurated in 1999, the company’s 16 years of existence has proved remarkably beneficial in the global energy mix, crafting ultra-modern ideas that have contributed to resolving present day energy needs such as supply reliability, fuel cost volatility and overall conserving the earths scarce natural resources and fossil fuels with its exclusive cadmium telluride (CdTe) film technology, successfully achieving the undermost leveled cost of electricity (LCOE) in the entire industry. They also extraordinarily lowered manufacturing costs to the bare minimum i.e. less than a dollar per watt, another record breaker, and a new goal limit set for capital efficiency. (Citation, year) This success, although seen to only further excel, faced new rivalries in 2011, hence leading to the gradual decline of their electric empire in the solar module industry. Specializing in the production of crystal silicon (c-Si), these emergent companies such as Trina, Yingli and Suntech raced to not only reach but overcome these newly set standards, rapidly reducing overall manufacturing costs and increasing output. In 2013, Suntech replaced First Solar acclaiming the number one position of modules worldwide. Several strategic issues had surfaced due to which First Solar led to its downfall. Of the two major reasons, the first is that these new entrants began selling crystalline-silicon solar panels for less than a dollar, creating a price clash. Secondly, the silicon solar panels proved more efficient than the thin-filmed cadmium-telluride solar panels hence consumers preferred the newer products over theirs as they were getting better quality and reliability for the same price. Although a major part of their profits were accumulated from their solar power plants and installation, these low budgeted and better quality Chinese panels forced

Glass Castle Essay Example for Free

Glass Castle Essay However, there are some far more substantial themes and symbols taking place within the novel. These themes require a little more critical thought, and aren’t directly delivered to the reader. One of these themes being the heavy emphasis placed on the glass castle, and also metaphorically what it signifies to Jeanette and her father, Rex. Through extensive deliberation and thought, the meaning of the glass castle becomes clear. It stands for the contrast between how Jeanette views her father, and how everyone else sees him. The idea of the glass castle in itself is the idolized version of Rex that Jeanette sees, while the reality of it never being completed, represents the views that everyone else has. Throughout the novel there are multiple instances that show the strong love and trust Jeanette feels for her father. A bond that remains strong, even when other member’s of the family have lost some of that trust. This contrast of emotions can best be described through various quotes given throughout the novel. â€Å"In my mind, Dad was perfect, although he did have what mom called a bit of a drinking situation† (Walls 23). This is one of the first occasions where the reader is introduced to the contrasting feelings about Rex that members of the Walls family have. Jeannette, despite already knowing that her father has a drinking problem at a young age, still feels that her father can do no wrong. This sets the scene for how most of the book develops, Jeannette idolizing her father, despite the slight disdain visibly felt by others. â€Å"We laughed about all the kids who believed in the Santa Clause myth and got nothing but a bunch of cheap plastic toys. Years from now, when all the junk they got is broken and long forgotten,’ dad said, ‘ you’ll still have your stars† (41). This is yet another example of the strong bond developed between Rex and Jeannette. However, it is important to note this quote is delivered at a time when Rex is still in relatively good standings with the rest of the family, besides just Jeannette. On that Christmas, even though he couldn’t provide his children with material gifts, he was still able to deliver a memorable gift, which the children could cherish for the rest of their lives. I swear honey, there are times when I think you’re the only one around who still has faith in me,’ he said. ’I don’t know what I’d do if you ever lost it. ’ I told him I would never lose faith in him. And I promised myself I never would† (78-79). This quote perfectly sums up the relationship Rex had with his daughter. It also further exemplifies th e acknowledged differences between how Jeannette feels about her father, and how the rest of the family feels. Even though Rex has let Jeannette down just as many times as Lori, or Brian, she is still able to somehow see past these faults of Rex’s. Throughout this novel the character’s general feelings on Rex sway dramatically. Even Jeannette’s feelings for her father are tried at some points. Yet through everything that happens she never truly loses faith in her father. Jeannette always maintains a sense of respect and love for Rex, despite the tribulations he has brought the family through. Even up to his last moments on his deathbed, Jeannette’s positive feelings for her father remain strong. This contrasted affection between what Jeannette feels for Rex, and what everyone else thinks, is what the glass castle really signifies.

Essay --

Gun Control The time has come for our country to take action to reduce gun violence in America. Aurora, Colorado, Sandy Hook Elementary School, and most recently Arapahoe High School are only three of the recent atrocities. More than twenty mass shootings have taken place since 2009, yet many people still believe it’s acceptable to own guns. We, as a country, have suffered too many losses to not take action. No laws created can ever fully stop every act of violence, but there are ways to prevent the mentally ill, the suicidal, and criminally minded from buying guns and ammunition. If the government tries to ban people from owning every type of gun, we will get no where with the issue. The problem in our country is having access to assault rifles and handguns. Many assault rifles sold are semi-automatic, firing one round every time the trigger is pulled. For example, an AR-15 can fire between 45 and 60 rounds per minute. No civilian needs to have a gun this powerful; the only place they should be allowed is for military use. Having these types of guns available to the public ...

Pluma: Rizal, Ang Dakilang Manunulat Essay

Jose Rizal, just like any of us, used to live an ordinary life. Just like a normal person, he underwent the mundane stages of human life such as infancy, childhood, adolescence, and adulthood. Yet, unlike any of us, Rizal inadvertently stood out because he lived by the saying, â€Å"Live life to the fullest.† He made the best out of his 35 years of existence. However, certain events and persons might have inspired him on the first place that eventually transformed his life from ordinary to an â€Å"extraordinary† one. Rizal’s parents, Francisco Mercado and Teodora Alonso, had already introduced to him the value of education. His father owned several books in their shelf in which the young Rizal had a lot of novels to choose from and to read that suits his interest as a child. His mother also served as his first teacher. She taught him how to read and write. At an early age, he already shows brilliance as a writer with a good sense of social awareness. An 8-year old Rizal was able to write his first poem, â€Å"Sa Aking mga Kabata.† This poem highlights love of nationality and Filipino language. Additionally, he excelled academically when he started attending schools in the Philippines, as well as in abroad. Putting his thoughts into writing became his hobby through the years. His works such as A La Juventud Filipina and El Consejo de los Dioses earned him the recognition to the Filipino youth and won an award in Manila respectively. Given the fact that Rizal’s eyes had long been opened to the awful reality during Spanish colonization, he further wrote novels, which include the famous Noli Me Tangere (Touch Me Not) and El Filibusterismo (The Reign of Greed). Most likely, the former includes the story of Sisa, which was said to be inspired by what happened to his mother, Teodora, who was imprisoned due to the accusation of poisoning her sister-in-law. This taste of injustice could have aided Rizal to boost his patriotism. The latter was also written in honor of the memory of GOMBURZA who were executed due to the 1872 Cavite mutiny. With the aid of Paciano who witnessed the execution, Rizal’s eyes became widely opened to the gruesome reality of the Philippine society during their time. In a celebration of the achievement of Juan Luna’s Spoliarium and Felix Resurreccion Hidalgo’s Las Virgenes Cristianas Expuestas al Populacho, Rizal also realized and proclaimed that Filipinos do have something to be proud of.

The Wives of Anthony the Great

Mark Antony was a womanizer and it could be said that his decisions were made by his wife, which was considered improper behavior at the time. The Roman emperors Claudius and Nero ran into trouble later for similar reasons, so although Antonys third wife Fulvia had what may have been good ideas, Antony was frowned upon for following them. Antonys debauched lifestyle was expensive, and so by an early age, he had accumulated tremendous debt. It is possible that all his marriages were carefully conceived to provide money or political advantage, as Eleanor G. Huzar argues in Mark Antony: Marriages vs. Careers, from The Classical Journal. The following information comes from her article. Fadia The first possible wife of Antony was Fadia, the daughter of a rich freedman named Quintus Faius Gallus. This marriage is attested in Ciceros Philippics and letter 16 to Atticus. However, it is an implausible marriage because Antony was a member of the Plebeian nobility. His mother was a 3d cousin of Caesar. The marriage may have been arranged to help with Antonys 250 talent debt. Cicero says Fadia and children were all dead by at least 44 B.C. If he actually married her, Antony probably divorced her. Children: Unknown Antonia In his late 20s, Antony married his cousin Antonia, a proper wife, to help his career. She bore him a daughter and they remained married for about 8 years. He divorced her in 47 B.C. on a charge of adultery with Publius Cornelius Dolabella, husband of Ciceros daughter Tullia. Children: Daughter, Antonia. Fulvia In 47 or 46 B.C., Antony married Fulvia. She had already been married to 2 of Antonys friends, Publius Clodius and Gaius Scribonius Curio. Cicero said she was the driving force behind Antonys decisions. She bore him two sons. Fulvia was active in political machinations and although Antony denied knowledge of it, Fulvia and Antonys brother mutinied against Octavian (the Perusine War). She then fled to Greece where Antony met her. When she died shortly thereafter in 40 B.C. he blamed himself. Children: Sons, Marcus Antonius Antyllus and Iullus Antonius. Octavia Part of the reconciliation between Antony and Octavian (following the mutiny) was the marriage between Antony and Octavians sister Octavia. They married in 40 B.C. and Octavia bore their first child the following year. She acted as peacemaker between Octavian and Antony, trying to persuade each to accommodate the other. When Antony went east to fight the Parthians, Octavia moved to Rome where she looked after Antonys brood (and continued to do so even after divorce). They remained married for five more years during which time they never saw each other again. Antony divorced Octavia in 32 B.C. when the confrontation that was to be the Battle of Actium seemed unavoidable. Children: Daughters, Antonia Major and Minor. Cleopatra Antonys last wife was Cleopatra. He acknowledged it and their children in 36 B.C. It was a marriage that was to be unrecognized at Rome. Huzar argues that Antony made the marriage in order to utilize Egyptian resources. Octavian wasnt very forthcoming with the troops Antony needed for his Parthian campaign, so he had to look elsewhere. The marriage ended when Antony committed suicide following the Battle of Actium. Children: Fraternal Twins, Alexander Helios and Cleopatra Selene II; Son, Ptolemy Philadelphus.
